The story
History split from ours here in 1952. This Britain still burns coal, still counts in shillings and pence, still keeps its county asylums. Now its wells run warm, the frost stops at the edge of the fields, and on the Northumberland coast they call it the Low Heat and get on with things.
Nora Marrow walked into this country in October, out of a dying world, carrying a written account of what broke it. She is a paramedic in a country that has never heard of one, and there is no record she was ever born. At Kyloe House, a nine-hundred-bed asylum on the edge of the moor, a careful, clever psychiatrist hears every word and writes her up as a fixed false belief.
So Nora does what she was trained to do. She takes observations. A hill farmer’s weekly soil readings, plotted on the backs of ward menus, rise each week by more than the week before. The line doesn’t level off. It gives a date.
She can be believed about the heat, or she can be believed about herself. Not both.
Every universe felt it. None of them know why. Fixed False Belief continues the story begun in The Pruning. It is the second of three Helios Cascade novels read in order.

Fixed False Belief is the second of three books that are read in order. It continues directly from The Pruning, and it will spoil that book if you read it first. Start with The Pruning.
The rest of the Helios Cascade is not like this. Every other book is standalone science fiction, set in its own world and crossed with its own genre, sharing no plot and no characters with this one — only a single moment: the instant reality began to change, everywhere at once, in more worlds than anyone could count.
Read those in any order you like.
Content note
This novel is set largely inside a psychiatric hospital. It includes detention and treatment against a patient’s will, among them a forced injection; deaths from heat, some of them on the page; and grief for a parent. There is no sexual content and little strong language.
