The story
The Columbian Survey calls the field the Quiet Ground. Every few weeks, sound dies there for eleven seconds. Nobody on the mountain knows what happens at the end of the eleven.
Nora Marrow does. She is a paramedic from another world, and she has taken the job of station medic at the Kestrel Peak observatory for one reason: when the silence ends, a door opens for a second. She has used doors like it for four years. She means to leave by this one.
But the silences are coming further apart, and the curve says they stop before winter. Upstairs, the Survey’s senior astronomer is dying, and racing to prove what the new sky really is before she runs out of nights. At the gate, a Navy commander has classified the whole zenith and wants the door for his own. And the engineer who logs every silence lost his brother to one.
Nora has never stayed anywhere long enough to be needed. Now there is one door left, and everyone on the mountain needs her.
Every universe felt it. None of them know why. A Sky Not Ours closes the story begun in The Pruning and continued in Fixed False Belief. It is the third of three Helios Cascade novels read in order.

About this book
A Sky Not Ours is the third of three books that are read in order. It continues directly from Fixed False Belief, and it will spoil that book if you read it first. Start with The Pruning.
The rest of the Helios Cascade is not like this. Every other book is standalone science fiction, set in its own world and crossed with its own genre, sharing no plot and no characters with this one — only a single moment: the instant reality began to change, everywhere at once, in more worlds than anyone could count.
Read those in any order you like.
Content note
This novel follows a terminal illness through to a death, with the nursing care that goes with it. It includes a death by injury, described in a medical report, and an animal killed in a test. There is no sexual content and little strong language.
